Clare Lancaster from Dot Marketing recently released her ebook Using Twitter for Business over at TwitterGuide.com.au. I’ve been following Clare on Twitter for a while now and was really looking forward to this ebook so I could read more of her fantastic advice on the uses of Twitter for businesses (I am after all in business myself!).
There are a thousand beginner’s guides to Twitter available across the web but they are mostly instruction manuals for how to use Twitter.com or a particular Twitter client. Very few resources are available that will guide you on how to use Twitter as a tool to benefit your business. In Clare’s own words:
Q: Why did you write Using Twitter for Business?
A: I wrote Using Twitter for Business primarily for clients of my consulting business – Dot Marketing.
Twitter had been gaining momentum in mainstream media with news stories appearing daily. The tipping point for me seemed to be when it was mentioned on a popular night time entertainment show.
In the following days I received a lot of interest from small business owners wanting to know what Twitter was and how they could use it to benefit their business.
There is mountains of information about Twitter online but it wasn’t offered in one place where business owners could simply and easily get up to date and start using Twitter for business. I had also found that using Twitter had made the single biggest impact on my business then any other web app – from lead generation to target market feedback to strategic partnerships and wanted to share what I’d found.
Q: Who would benefit most from reading your ebook?
People who need to get up to date quickly – anyone who hasn’t got time to read through lengthy articles or go researching themselves and want to get up and running asap. Most commonly small business owners, traditional Marketing Managers and web designers who want to teach their clients about Twitter 101.
At just over 20 pages long Using Twitter for Business is the perfect size and very easy to digest. I read it on my train ride home from the office and by the time I stepped off the train I had a stream of new ideas and enthusiasm for how to use Twitter to promote myself and my business.
The guide covers the basics of Twitter, how to sign up an account, how to go about connecting with other people, how to conduct yourself properly on Twitter and avoid turning people off your business, and a glossary of Twitter terms and slang to refer to. As a bonus Clare also includes tips from other small business owners that are using Twitter today and some recommended software tools to get you started quickly.
The most obvious criticism that would pop up is that the guide appears short. But who has the time when running a business to read hundreds of pages on how to use some social media tool? The beauty of Twitter is its simplicity, and this guide perfectly distills all of the knowledge you need to begin using this simple but powerful tool.
