In this podcast I talk about the difference between depth and speed for blogging, and how you can use a strategy of depth to stand out in highly competitive niches.

In the podcast I talk about two different styles of blog post and how each has a different traffic profile.  Here is an example from one of my blogs.

This first post was written about a topic that was pretty hot but only for a short period of time.  So it has a burst of traffic and then died off shortly afterwards.

This second post was written about a topic that is not as hot on any given day, but has been performing reasonably well over a longer period of time.

In the time period for both of those graphs the first post delivered about 1800 visitors, while the second post delivered over 5000 visitors.

Ask yourself which of those types of posts you’d prefer to have more of on your blog.

  1. Hey Paul, totally agree with what you’re saying in this podcast. Nearly all niche blogs these days are very competitive and overwhelming for less established bloggers. I’m already confronting the problem of trying to write about gadgets that have been widely covered in larger sites. It has me rethinking about how I need to refine my site and consider more what its purpose is. Going deeper is definitely a more unique approach to take. Thanks for this.
