How to Make Blogging Affordable

One of the amazing things about blogging is that you can do it at absolutely no cost at all, other than your time.  Just signup at WordPress.com or Blogger and start a blog on any topic you want.  Nice and easy, and free too!

But despite the availability of free blogging services a lot of us run self-hosted blogs using software like WordPress.org and our on domain name and web hosting account.  Compared to a lot of things in life this is very cheap, but for some people it can be expensive.

When my daughter, our second child, arrived our finances became tight, as they do for families all over the world.  And yet despite this I was able to keep blogging, to keep paying my web hosting bill and upgrade my blogs to the premium Thesis theme, buy ebooks and training courses, buy new domain names for future projects, and many more expenses.

How Freelance Blogging Kept My Business Going

I was able to afford all of this thanks to freelance blogging.  Just over a year ago I responded to an advertisement for bloggers to join a tech blog.  The topic was right up my alley thanks to my day job, and the company accepted my fairly low asking rate.  I started writing one post per week for them, quickly expanding that two posts each week.

Last year I made nearly $8000 freelance blogging.  More than enough to keep my blogs running.

Could Freelance Blogging Make Blogging More Affordable for You?

Take a moment and think about something you’ve wanted to buy recently that would help out with your blogging.  A new premium theme or plugin?  A great ebook to help you build a better blog?  Better web hosting so you survive your next viral post?

If money is what is holding you back then give freelance blogging a try. My free guide on How to Become a Freelance Blogger is available to Blogging Teacher mailing list subscribers by signing up here.

Hi Tom, I don’t know about “time rich”, I’m one of the time poorest (?) people I Know! The key is to automate the monitoring of your niche so fresh ideas are always at hand, have a good streamlined blogging workflow, and otherwise apply good time management and discipline to keep to your posting schedule.

I have to agree with the time management and planning goes a long way with that.

For the bringing in of fresh ideas for your niche…Google Alerts work great.

You have to make time for your blog, even if you choose to wake up 1 hour before you go to work or dedicate 1 – 2 hours at night to work on your blog before you go to sleep.

In the beginning, take your time, but put effort and time because if you are consistent, in time, it will pay off.

You have to make time for it. I’m a morning person, so I try to write first thing, before I get bogged down or distracted by other tasks.

Three other important things: automate it with alerts, write down your ideas, and keep them together in a folder (virtual or real).
